One of the most traditional events on television is the opening of the year on La 1, the New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. This evening, La 2 focuses on films for the whole family with ET, the extraterrestrial, at the center. The film offering is rounded off by an unforgettable western, Río Bravo, on Movistar Clásicos. In addition, COSMO will broadcast a unique Christmas episode of the Sister Boniface Mysteries series. For its part, Cuatro offers a new edition of the “In Search of Nirvana” competition.
New Year's concert
11.15, The 1st
The traditional New Year's concert takes place in La 2 with the Vienna Philharmonic, this year Christian Thielemann is conducting. The program, which includes a work by Bruckner for the first time, brings together pieces by the Strauss family, Hellmesberger, Ziehrer and Lumbye and ends with the long-awaited Radetzky March. As usual, the Vienna State Ballet will also be there with choreography by Davide Bombana.
“Bravo River”
7.35 p.m., Movistar Classics
USA, 1959 (130 minutes). Directed by Howard Hawks. Cast: John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Angie Dickinson.
Dean Martin, stricken by alcohol, tries to retrieve a coin that was thrown into a spittoon in a saloon. John Wayne prevents it from a huge perspective. The majestic opening of Rio Bravo draws the characters in just a few strokes. And Howard Hawks, along with Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan, locks them up in a dirty prison for almost the entire length of the film. There are four heroes who guard a prisoner and wait for the threat from outside. In Río Bravo there are no grasslands, no plains, no air. In it live tired and wounded, suffocated characters who just want to survive.
Christmas with the series “Sister Boniface”
8:30 p.m., COSMO
It's Christmas and Britain is experiencing its worst winter on record. In this setting, the series Sister Boniface Mysteries tells how the nun sees a train journey interrupted due to ice. When the Eastern Star, a precious jewel, is stolen from the railway safe and it turns out that a passenger has been murdered, the Sister must use her great skills to solve the mystery.
“ET the Alien”
22.05, The 2nd
United States, 1982 (115 minutes). Director: Steven Spielberg. Cast: Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore.
Steven Spielberg creates the most stubborn but also most lovable alien in the history of cinema. Although “ET” plays with low-risk and sometimes conventional elements, the filmmaker's eye knows how to overcome the stereotypes of his story. Spielberg clearly shows his ability to play with the viewer's feelings and also to take him into the magical world of stories that come from the heart.
The adventures continue in Nepal
11 p.m., four
The participants of “In Search of Nirvana” enter the final section of the program with new challenges. Among other things, they must immerse themselves in ice water and compete in question-and-answer sessions, accurately imitate a thangka painting and milk buffalo.
