After two years of war against Russia, the Ukrainian army is having difficulty recruiting. The men are unruly and lawsuits for disobedience to the army are increasing.

Ukraine is desperately looking for new soldiers to relieve the burden on the men at the front who are exhausted after two years of war. Some mobilized people pay for training to be ready. In ten days they learn fighting, shooting and even first aid in war. “I don’t really want to fight, but I have no choice,” said Anton, 39, a trader. According to the trainers, half of the group should be mobilized.

10 years in prison for refusing to fight

In Zhytomyr (Ukraine), two soldiers who were on combat duty were sent off for recruitment after being injured. They walk the streets looking for potential candidates. Many are unruly. Videos of energetic recruitment are circulating on social networks. “Anyone who is mobilized by force will be a bad soldier,” assures one recruiter. Trials for disobedience to the army are increasing across the country and prison sentences for deserters have been increased to 12 years and for refusing to fight to 10 years. Refusal to mobilize is punishable by three to five years in prison.
