This is Craig Mokhiber, an American lawyer specializing in human rights who has worked in the organization for more than three decades, where he has held various roles: he held positions as head of the human rights and development team and principal adviser on human rights at the United Nations in both Palestine and Afghanistan.
He also “led the team of human rights specialists at the high-level mission in Darfur, headed the Rule of Law and Democracy Department, and served as head of the Economic and Social Affairs Department.” He currently headed the UN Human Rights Office in New York.
The resignation comes in a context in which international solidarity with Palestine is growing and in recent weeks there have been massive mobilizations in this regard around the world, including in the United States.
The organization officially stated that the resignation was for “personal reasons,” but Mokhiber’s resignation letter leaves no doubt as to the reasons: The now former official denounces the “failure of the UN in Gaza” and accuses the organization of “lowering its head have”. in the face of power” and “receiving enormous pressure from Israel and its allies not to denounce the genocide against the Palestinians.”
In his letter, he also calls for people to “join the growing global anti-apartheid movement in support of the Palestinian people.” In a dialogue with the Europa Press agency, Mokhiber said: “We are witnessing a genocide before our eyes and the UN organizations do not seem to have the power to stop it.”
Days before his resignation, Mokhiber already expressed his positions on his “Palestinian people. by Western corporate media. Both must end now. “Defend human rights.”

In his resignation letter, he also denounces how Israel is putting pressure on international organizations so that any criticism of them is seen as “anti-Semitism” and equates itself with the Jewish people, “something that is not the case with criticism of other theocratic countries such as… case is”. This is the second resignation at a relatively important level due to Israel’s brutal military operation in the Gaza Strip. Two weeks ago, a senior US State Department official named Josh Paul resigned from his post due to the Biden administration’s “blind support” of Israel.
These cracks in the upper echelons of power simply reflect a much deeper process coming from below: international solidarity with Palestine as Israel’s genocide in Gaza shows its cruelest and most criminal face.
