War in Ukraine: The underground is used as a front line

To withstand the Russian army, Ukrainian soldiers are digging tunnels to protect themselves from drone attacks. The fight promises to be long and deadly.

Faced with numerous attacks by Russian forces, Volodymyr Zelensky's army has adjusted its combat tactics. The Ukrainian military dug tunnels near Russian positions to camouflage themselves and avoid numerous deadly drone attacks. “We have 15 to 20 minutes to get there before the drones arrive,” warns a Ukrainian soldier.

“Lots of old soldiers”

These tunnels are used in particular to carry out attacks closer to Russian positions and to supply ammunition to Ukrainian soldiers at the front. A stressful everyday life. “The stress factor increases heart problems. We have many older soldiers taking part in this war,” explains a Ukrainian doctor. After two years of war, the conditions in which these soldiers live are worrying the Ukrainian government about a return to civilian life.
