Xavier Rubilar, an electric company employee in San Luís, Argentina, was on his way to a man’s house to turn off the electricity for nonpayment when he came across a sign that made him change his plans. “Please don’t turn off my light. I lost my job, I’m alone with my two daughters. I will pay as soon as possible,” reads the note shared by Rubilar on his social networks.

The initiative

When the employee saw the news, he was moved and did not hesitate to help by starting a solidarity collection to help the man and sharing the story through his WhatsApp contacts and social networks. “I want to help this man. He doesn’t know anything and won’t know who paid for it, but he will find a nice gift for Father’s Day. Please help me,” the employee explained. The initiative quickly went viral and touched thousands of users who wanted to do their part to help the struggling family through multiple bank transfers. As the employee explains to La Nación: “I contacted him and showed him all the money movements that were on social networks.” A few hours later I received calls from people who wanted to pay all their bills. As the hours passed, we reached the total.”

Fundraising

In just a few days, the campaign was a complete success, managing to raise up to 49,729 Argentine pesos (just over 400 euros), more than enough to pay overdue electricity bills. Meanwhile, his father couldn’t believe how much help he was receiving and how many people were working to make sure he wasn’t left powerless. According to Rubilar, the man received the money with tears of joy.
