MOSCOW (Portal) – If Israel launches a ground offensive against the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafa, the possibility of Palestinians crowded in that city moving to Egypt will increase, the deputy minister general for humanitarian affairs and United Nations emergency relief coordinator warned on Thursday , Martin Griffiths.
“The possibility of a military operation in Rafa with the possibility of blocking the pass [fronterizo]with the possibility of overflow, […] some kind of Egyptian nightmare […] This is something we have in mind,” Griffiths said, quoted by Portal.
According to the senior official, the idea that Gaza's population can be brought to safety is an “illusion.” “We should all hope that Israel’s friends and those who care about Israel’s security will advise them well during this time,” he added.
Earlier, Richard Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization's (WHO) representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, warned that an Israeli offensive in Rafa would trigger an “unbelievable catastrophe” and bring the health system in the Gaza Strip “to the brink of collapse.”
Meanwhile, the South African government submitted this Tuesday an “urgent application” to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to demand Israel's decision to carry out an offensive in the city of Gaza. (RT) (Photo: AP)
