The leader of a pro-Iranian armed group that Washington says was involved in attacks against its troops was killed in an American attack in Iraq on Thursday, January 4, an American defense official confirmed the same day. “This attack was an act of self-defense. No civilians were injured. No infrastructure or facilities were affected,” he said in a statement.
The attack was aimed at the leader of one of the factions of the pro-Iran armed group Hachd al-Chaabi. The latter was “actively involved in organizing and carrying out attacks on American troops,” the official added, confirming the death of another member of the group. Both were killed in a drone strike on their organization's building in Baghdad.
The bomb target
Since the war began on October 7 between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza, American troops stationed in Iraq and Syria and those of the international anti-jihadist coalition have been the target of drone and rocket attacks almost daily. In recent weeks, Iraq's Hashd al-Shaabi armed groups have been the target of multiple bombings, some of which have been claimed by the United States, a country hated by pro-Iranian factions for its support for Israel.
