The US government has announced a new immigration plan that includes measures to end illegal entry of migrants into the country. This is intended to make it easier for asylum seekers to find legal routes throughout the western hemisphere so that they can enter the country safely.
The highlights of this plan are the six relevant changes affecting migrants awaiting asylum at the southern border. However, these changes also apply to those wishing to enter the United States by land, air, and sea.
As you know, Title 42 of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will be repealed on May 11th. Title 8, and with it the changes mentioned above, will be implemented in its place.
What does the return to Title 8 of the Immigration Act (INA) mean?
With this title, immigration officers interview immigrants to determine if there are reasons for a credible fear of staying in North America.
If they determine that this is not the case, an expedited deportation procedure will be initiated. However, when they exist, immigrants are sent before the immigration judge to be admitted into the country.
Other changes included in the new plan include the assessment of asylum applications and expedited deportation procedures. Thus, those who arrive at the southwest border and do not have a residence permit are quickly processed and disposed of.
With such an expedited process, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will expedite screening of eligible migrants. This will also be the case with the expulsion of those who do not.
To conduct law enforcement, DHS has more capacity in the new detention centers and more technology.

The third change is to increase the number of deportation flights per week and the funds for deportations. With that in mind, DHS has expanded its air and ground transportation capabilities to quickly expel migrants.
Likewise, migrants are transported to less congested border sections. This in order to continue the immigration control procedures.
For their part, flights to Cuba are included in the sharp increase in weekly relocation flights. So much so that the number of weekly flights to some countries will double or triple.
Another aspect is that the US government is working with foreign partners to crack down on networks that charge high fees to migrants.
Likewise, those who arrive at international airports in the region and intend to cross the border illegally will be deported with a penalty.
The fourth relevant change in this immigration plan is the opening of regional processing centers outside of the United States. This measure allows for the opening of Regional Processing Centers (RPC) throughout the Western Hemisphere to facilitate access to legal channels.
With this in mind, it is expected that the first centers could be in Colombia and Guatemala, as well as in several countries in the region.
Prior to travel, an appointment must be made by telephone to visit the nearest RPC for an interview with immigration specialists. Those who are eligible are sent through legal channels to the United States, Canada and Spain.

Another change is the provision of resources for frontier communities. As such, DHS will commit an additional $290 million in the coming weeks.
Also, coordination between state and local officials and other federal agencies will be improved to provide more resources, technical assistance, and support.
Finally, the sixth amendment leads to an aggressive campaign against smuggling and criminal networks.
