At a time when thousands of Cubans are illegally entering the United States-Mexico border, Joe Biden’s administration is preparing to offer Covid-19 vaccines to migrants detained on the line between the two nations.
Sources familiar with the plans, and confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, said the plan could expand to the thousands of migrants found along the country’s southern border at a rate of initially 2,700 vaccines per day, according to CNN.
The Department of Homeland Security could also provide up to 6,000 per day by the end of May, the media reported, citing a message to the US Congress.
The measure would be a change after disabling what it called Title 42, a pandemic emergency rule by Donald Trump’s administration that has allowed authorities to refuse and expeditiously deport migrants who have been detained at this border crossing for more than two years will. .
This proposal was previously rejected because it could encourage more people to come to the United States, according to CNN sources, but it is now gaining strength as it seeks to give detainees who are or will be handed over to NGOs a reasonable deportation supply to be sent to the community.
Thousands of Cubans are in the latter case, as from October 2021 to early this March, more than 46,000 immigrants entered the United States from the island, traveling via Mexico.
The Cubans who make the trip are generally vaccinated with Abdala and Soberana 02, nationally manufactured drugs that are not yet recognized by the World Health Organization, but with this action by the Biden administration, they could also have an internationally recognized vaccination certificate, for example, to travel to the countries of the European Union.
Washington expects the number of immigrants to increase in the coming months, according to White House specialists, once Trump’s Title 42 is lifted and those intending to enter the country are vaccinated, this will be presented as another option to address this pandemic that has already claimed the lives of more than a million Americans.
