The United States expects Spain to attend the Summit of the Americas to be held in Los Angeles, California in June, diplomatic sources told Efe on Sunday. The invitation was made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to his Spanish counterpart José Manuel Albareswho will represent Spain at the event, added the same sources.
Washington has indicated that Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua will not be among the guests as they do not respect democracy, which has caused unease across the continent. However, the administration of US President Joe Biden has not yet publicly announced the list of countries convened for the summitwhat he hopes to do in the next few days.
The first to raise his voice in favor of the possible exclusion of these three countries was Mexican President López Obrador, who has announced his absence unless all the countries of America are invited, a position later endorsed by Bolivian President Luis Arce. The Caribbean Community (Caricom), which has 15 members, has also questioned its participation for the same reason, citing pressure from Washington to change its mind.
While the Presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández; from Chile, Gabriel Boric; and from Honduras, Xiomara Castro, have not ruled out their participation, but they have demanded that no one be expelled from the conclave. The Summit of the Americas will be held June 6-10 in Los Angeles, California, for the first time in the United States since the 1994 edition.
One of the main objectives of the regional meeting is the Elaboration of a joint statement on migration, at a time when migratory flows are increasing in the Americas. The other big question is how to restart the economic recovery after the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
