- The Ukrainian President is expected in Washington today. According to CNN, which quotes two sources, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is on his way to the United States for a visit that has been kept secret until the last moment. He is scheduled to meet Wednesday with congressional leaders as well as elected officials serving on a parliamentary national security committee. The Ukrainian leader is also expected to speak during a plenary session of Congress. The two heads of state should finally meet in the White House.
- Mr Zelensky traveled yesterday to Bakhmout, an eastern town devastated by intense fighting. During his trip to the front, the President of Ukraine received a flag signed by fighters and declared: “We will give it to the American Congress, to the American President. We are grateful for their support, but that’s not enough. Troops from Moscow have been trying to take the city devastated by the fighting since the summer.
- Most of the fighting is currently concentrated in the east of the country. After a series of backlashes by the Russian military in north-east and south Ukraine, Vladimir Putin on Tuesday admitted that the situation in the four regions of south and east Ukraine was “extremely difficult”, including Moscow, which is calling for annexation without it being complete to have conquered.
- The Russian President appeared on television on Tuesday. He presented awards to pro-Russian separatist soldiers and leaders from eastern Ukraine in the Kremlin. “Our country has repeatedly faced challenges and defended its sovereignty. Today, Russia faces the same challenge again,” he said.
- Today, Mr. Putin wants to take stock of the past year and set his army’s goals for 2023. At a major meeting with 15,000 officials scheduled for Wednesday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will report in particular on the “progress of the special military operation” in Ukraine.
- Emmanuel Macron maintains his position on “guarantees” towards Russia. On Tuesday, the French President reiterated his position on the security guarantees that should be given to Russia if peace negotiations are held at the end of the war in Ukraine.
- New shipments of French arms to Ukraine. France recently delivered rocket launchers and Crotale missile batteries to Ukraine and will resume its arms deliveries in early 2023, Mr Macron also announced in an interview with TF1 and LCI aired on Tuesday.
- This was announced by the World BankTuesday, Grant an additional $610 million to Ukraine to enable the country to address “the most urgent health needs”. Last week, the institution approved $2 billion to support Ukraine’s private sector and fund preparations for reconstruction.
