Paris leads call for a binding deal on plastic pollution. In this city, high-level officials from France and the United Nations met to call on the international community to take urgent action against the disposal of this waste.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna called for immediate action to curb the damage plastic is causing to the planet and human health. Every year, 11 million tons of plastic are dumped into ocean spaces around the world, choking oceans and ecosystems, eroding biodiversity and endangering health.

Colonna warned that this phenomenon will triple in the next 40 years if we don’t act immediately.

The forum in Paris, which was attended by almost 40 environment ministers from different continents, was the prelude to the second negotiation session for a binding treaty to combat plastic pollution.

The Director of the UN Environment Programme, Inger Andersen, also stressed the importance of the treaty and the need to reduce the scale of the problem. The aim is to achieve the instrument before the end of 2024.
