The US government asked for help from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to persuade China to support a project to relaunch a UN peacekeeping operation in Haiti. With information from Jamil Chad, columnist for UOL.
According to the columnist, sources at the Planalto Palace confirmed that Americans are concerned about the crisis in the Caribbean country and want to restore the international mission. To do this, they need the approval of the Security Council. But with the war in Ukraine shattering ties between the great powers, the search for bridges between Washington and Beijing could end up in the hands of Brazilian diplomacy.
However, the Brazilian government is scrapping the possibility of a return to send soldiers from the country for the mission the Americans want. Because Brazil led the peacekeeping operation in Haiti for more than a decade.
The perception is that today there is no solid climate between the Brazilian Armed Forces and the Executive Branch to consider a new foreign project.
After Brazil’s refusal, the US is looking to its neighbor Canada for an alternative for the country to lead a new mission.
Lula’s good relationship with the Chinese government still gives Americans hope that Brazil will help them with their project in the future.

The issue was discussed last week between US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda ThomasGreenfield and Special Advisor to the Presidency Celso Amorim.
“Regarding Haiti, both of our countries are frustrated with the situation in Haiti. We have discussed, particularly in the Security Council, some ways we can move forward in addressing these issues. And we’re committed to working together to find solutions that can address the issue more headon,” said Linda Thomas.
Biden’s government also recalled that the Haitian government and its people had previously asked for international assistance to combat the violence and insecurity plaguing the country. Such factors, the US said, would show the urgency of carrying out the peace project it defends.
