According to the Pentagon, the United States carried out attacks on two targets in Syria this Friday (27). In a statement, the US Department of Defense said the bombings were ordered by President Joe Biden.
The U.S. government said it carried out the bombings in response to attacks that U.S. troops have faced in recent days.
“These precision selfdefense strikes are in response to a series of sustained and largely unsuccessful attacks by Iranbacked militia groups on U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria that began on October 17,” said U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
The USA used an F16 fighter for the attacks. The defense reported that the targets served as weapons and ammunition storage facilities.
According to the Pentagon, the targets attacked in Syria are linked to groups backed by Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) considered terrorists by the US.
In addition, the United States government said the country would take additional measures if attacks by Iranlinked groups continue.
The bombings come amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which is ratcheting up tensions in the Middle East. The US government fears that US facilities in the region could become targets of the conflict.
The United States currently maintains more than 3,000 troops in Syria and Iraq to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State.
