US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday (May 1, 2022). According to Pelosi, the trip was undertaken to “send an unequivocal and resounding message to the entire world: The United States stands firm with Ukraine.”

In a statement, Pelosi said the President of Ukraine thanked him for the “significant support” from the United States.

“He conveyed the clear need for continued US security, economic and humanitarian assistance to deal with the devastating human toll taken on the Ukrainian people by the diabolical invasion [Vladimir] Putin,” Pelosi said, adding that the US delegation “proudly conveyed the message that additional support is on the way.”

US President Joe Biden has submitted a motion to Congress to release $33 billion in financial aid to Ukraine, to be submitted by September. If implemented, it will be the largest aid package for the country since the war with Russia began on February 24.

“When we return to the United States, we will do so better informed, deeply inspired, and ready to do whatever is necessary to help the Ukrainian people defend democracy,” Pelosi said.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

On April 24, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken paid Ukraine his first official visit since the Russian invasion began. Accompanied by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Blinken promised new military aid to the Ukrainian president.

The next day, the White House announced that Biden was interested in nominating Bridget Brink as Ambassador Extraordinary to Ukraine. Brink has served as Ambassador to Slovakia, Senior Adviser and Deputy Assistant Secretary at the European Affairs Service, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassies in Uzbekistan and Georgia.
