US Secretary of State Antony Blinken makes his first official visit to Canada as a senior US diplomat. He will travel to Ottawa on Thursday and Montreal the following day.
During his visit to Ottawa, Mr. Blinken will meet Secretary of State Mélanie Joly, with whom he will notably discuss the crisis in Haiti, the situation in Iran, the Arctic, Canada’s next Indo-Pacific strategy and the war in Ukraine.
“Canada and the United States have one of the most productive, cooperative and meaningful relationships in the world on a wide range of bilateral and global issues. Minister Blinken’s visit gives Canada an opportunity to re-emphasize the importance of close cooperation between the two countries on the world stage, including in the Indo-Pacific region,” Mélanie Joly said in a statement on Wednesday.
In Montreal, the US Secretary of State will visit a lithium recycling plant with Ms. Joly. The purpose of the visit is to “promote North America’s competitiveness and deepen economic and supply chain cooperation,” according to Mr. Blinken’s agenda.
