The US Senate confirms Cuban-American Julieta Valls as deputy secretary of state

Cuban-American Julieta Valls Noyes is the new Deputy Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration United States Department of Stateafter receiving approval from the relevant Senate committee last week, Radio Televisión Martí reported.

The daughter of Cuban refugees and a 1984 graduate of Wellesley University, Valls was appointed by President Joe Biden in June 2021 and confirmed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on March 24.

“Only in the United States could a refugee daughter become an assistant secretary of stateresponsible for refugee policy. Allow me a few silent tears of gratitudebut then I roll up my sleeves and get to work,” the officer wrote on her Twitter account.

From 2013 to 2015, the diplomat served as Deputy Secretary of the Office for European and Eurasian Affairs and Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2011 and 2013.

“Thank you for the great support. In my excitement, I overlooked other wonderful nations where refugees and their families also had opportunities to help others. I’m sure they were just as grateful for that as I was. I look forward to working with all partners on this important work.”wrote the one who was also director of the Institute for Foreign Services.

From 2008 to 2011, Valls was the Charge d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of the US Mission to the Holy See, in Rome.

In his work book his designation is as Vice Consul in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. In addition, she was transferred to the embassy in Guatemala City in 1987 before serving at the embassy diplomatic delegations from Panama and Spain.

He speaks Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. She is married to Nick Noyes, a retired Foreign Service officer, with whom she has three children: Alexandra, Nicolás and Mateo.
