US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned “countries that are sitting on the fence hoping to win from the war,” specifically citing Beijing. And the White House is investigating ‘secondary sanctions’
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
WASHINGTON US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has issued a stark warning to “countries today that are sitting on the fence hoping to reap some gains from the war.”
Theoretical words to states that have decided not to impose sanctions on Russia, such as China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Turkey.
Although Yellen specifically only mentioned Beijing.
The Minister spoke yesterday, Wednesday April 13, in a debate organized by the Atlantic Council Study Center in Washington. A streamed meeting that left its mark, even if the former Fed President remained vague in both the opening remarks and the Q&A.
This is the most significant and even the most ominous passage: “Let me say a few things to those who believe they see benefits in this situation by maintaining their ties with Russia and filling in the gaps left by others. These reasons are shortsighted. The future of our international order is at stake here, both in terms of peaceful security and economic prosperity. This is the system that benefits everyone. And I want to make it clear: the united coalition of countries applying the sanctions will not be indifferent to the actions of those trying to jeopardize the measures we have introduced ».
Yellen spoke in the morning. His phrases sparked a flurry of deliberation and speculation, which was interrupted in the afternoon by White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki. In his daily briefing, Psaki confirmed that the Biden administration is indeed “considering another round of sanctions. They could hit “other Russian financial institutions” and “other people close to Putin,” he added.
Above all, however, the spokesman did not rule out the most important perspective: the Americans could also impose “secondary sanctions”, i.e. hit these countries.
