A video released by the Iraqi government shows the outbreak of the fire that claimed more than 100 lives at a wedding in Iraq last Tuesday (26). The flames were reportedly caused by fireworks and candles lit in the hall.

In the pictures, the couple can be seen dancing in the middle of the room. Fireworks fired from the floor struck the ceiling of the room, causing the flames to spread quickly and cause some of the material in flames to fall on guests. Watch the video:

The public notices the flames breaking out and tries to escape, but the fire spreads very quickly. Of the approximately 800 guests, more than 100 died and 500 were injured. The bride is also one of the fatal victims.

Fire during the wedding becomes a tragedy

A fire during a wedding in a ballroom in a small town in northern Iraq killed at least 100 people and injured another 150, health authorities said on Wednesday (27).

At the main hospital in Karakosh, the small Christian town where the tragedy occurred, an AFP photographer watched several ambulances arrive in the middle of the night with sirens blaring.

According to the same source, dozens of people gathered in the courtyard of the medical center, including relatives of the victims and volunteers willing to donate blood.

A crowd with several body bags also gathered in front of the open doors of a refrigerated truck, the photographer reported.

Karakosh, also known as Bajdida or Al Hamdaniya, is located in Nineveh Province in northern Iraq, 51 km southeast of the metropolis of Mosul.

Health authorities in Nineveh “recorded 100 dead and more than 150 injured in the fire at a party hall in Al Hamdaniya,” Iraq’s official news agency INA reported in a “preliminary assessment.”
