“The Voice”: a colorful debut in direction

Steffy Beyong, Jay, Julie St-Pierre and Adam El Mouna fought their way to the semi-finals of the first live of the season of “La Voix” on Sunday night.

At Mels Studios, where twelve contestants defended their place in the adventure, the mood was sizzling.

Jennifer Lee-Dupuy, who will play the main character of the musical The Bodyguard, opened the evening with a number featuring the twelve contestants of this first quarterfinal. His incarnation of Whitney Houston is quite successful and his voice doesn’t live up to the comparison.

Frédérick de Grandpré simply appeared at the end of the number to emphasize his presence on the show.

Three contestants per team found themselves on stage to interpret a song of their choice that they were working on with their coach and benefited from Serge Denoncourt’s advice in staging their act.

At the end of the candidates’ performance, the coach has to distribute his 100 points among themselves, this vote is then combined with the audience vote percentage. The competitor with the highest score advances to the semifinals.

For Mario Pelchat’s team, Steffy Beyong was able to inject all the intensity and emotion the song required. With her deep and moving voice, she was able to directly touch the hearts of the audience.

Corneille knew how to follow Jay’s desire to defend himself with a completely revised version of Mario Pelchat’s “Crying in the rain”. A daring bet that will ultimately have paid off as it received the strongest audience vote of the evening.

In Marjo’s team, Julie St-Pierre has stopped hiding, she now shines with her great voice and the public follows her in this new adventure.

Finally, Adam El Mouna proved he was already an artist in his own right with his electric performance on Ray Charles’ “Hit The Road Jack.” His coach Marc Dupré and the public were not mistaken.

Julie St-Pierre wins her bet

For her team’s quarterfinals, Marjo first started rehearsals with Will by asking him why he joined “La Voix”, she was so impressed by his talent and confidence.

He decided to accompany himself on the electric guitar on the song “Né pour être sauvage” by Philippe Brach. A title that he knew how to liven up with a finale that was much more grunge than the original. Marjo was obviously super happy with this version.

Julie St-Pierre chose “Is That Alright,” a song from the movie A Star Is Born, which corresponds to the moment Lady Gaga’s character gets married. “I’ve been married for six years and that’s exactly how I feel in my couple,” she explained her choice. “I’m so proud,” his former coach Marc Dupré told him after his performance. Marjo emphasized her powerful voice. “But what I love most about you is your vulnerability. You let us into your inner garden.”

Philippe Plourde then accompanied himself on the piano in Offenbach’s “Promenade sur mars”, a favorite song of his father. “Not only do you have a unique stamp, you are unique. Tackling a great classic to make your own version of it, well done,” said his coach.

With Marjo’s 33 points added to the audience’s 45, Julie St-Pierre reaches the semifinals with great joy. “I’m learning a lot, I’m freeing myself from a lot of things,” she commented on her adventure so far. Anyone who dreams of singing more often and being on stage will be able to fulfill this wish.

Jay celebrated by the public

Mélodie-Jade, rescued by his dueling coach, performed with some difficulty the song “Respire” by Gaël Faye during the quarter-finals of “La Voix” for the Corneille team.

“If anyone has found their artistic identity from day one, it’s you,” said Marc Dupré. For her part, Corneille insisted on emphasizing the difficulty of the text she had chosen, which she rendered brilliantly.

Surprisingly, Jay wanted to defend his spot with “Crying in the Rain,” which he sang with aplomb in front of all who popularized it. However, he brought the song to a different vibe, with a little groove, a nod to his Caribbean roots. A performance that wowed the crowd. “It’s touching, it got me,” said Mario Pelchat. What you did with it, I want to do it now.” Corneille also said he was very proud of his candidate.

The third contestant from Corneille’s team, Élysabeth Rivest, chose Yseult’s song “I Love You,” which denounces toxic relationships. His intensity and the power of his voice enabled him to get the message across with the presence of a string quartet. “You just showed Quebec what I suspected in the duels, thank you,” his coach addressed him.

Of the 34 points awarded by the coach, Jay received a proud 60 points from the audience, an impressive score that gave him great pleasure. “It means everything to me,” he admitted. I don’t just make music for myself, I don’t just sing for myself, I do it for the people who listen to me. Thanks very much.”

The moving intensity of Steffy

The Voice 2023

Mario Pelchat has lined up three great voices from his team for this first Quarterfinal of The Voice. Marie-France Lantin, who broke the ice of blind auditions, was part of Corneille’s team before she was robbed by Mario Pelchat.

It was she who opened the competition with “A Beautiful Story”, the classic by Michel Fugain. She delivered a completely different version of the original. “She was the one who suggested doing this song and as soon as I heard it, she convinced me immediately,” Mario Pelchat admitted.

As a tribute to his parents, Joël Boudreault has decided to reinterpret the song “Laisse-moi t’aimer” by Mike Brant. “I would let myself be loved at any time,” commented Marjo after her performance. Mario Pelchat added that he sang really well and his interpretation was powerful.

When Steffy Beyong sees the emotions she distills with her voice, she feels that singing is her life’s work. To defend her place, she called out the song “If Only I Could Miss Her” by Calogero, which she dedicated to her father. “If we speak with a voice that comes from the heart, that’s it. It’s felt and true. The good thing about you is that even before we sing, we know we’re going to experience something awesome,” said Marc Dupré. The coach’s comments were along the same lines.

With 35 points from the coach and 43 points awarded by the public, Steffy Beyong won 78 points that allowed her to advance to the semifinals. “It wasn’t an easy song, but I could rely on a good coach,” she explained. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

Adam El Mouna’s supposed talent triumphs

The Voice 2023

Darren Vaudreuil has a rock star side that the coach wanted to play out in this quarterfinal.

At the rehearsal, the contestant took the opportunity to reveal that he had a tattoo of his face on his leg. He then defended his place with the song “We do what we love” by the group Les Respectables, giving it even more energy than the original version. At the end of his performance, he even revealed that he had a tattoo of Charles Lafortune’s face. “You were unleashed,” commented Marc Dupré.

Sorrene has struggled with authority since she was young and settled on the Elton John song ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’. “I was counting on the rehearsals, you did that song 47 times and it still gives me goosebumps when I hear it. I also like your journey, you fight, you grow, you are great,” said his coach.

Adam El Mouna concluded Marc’s trio. Dupre with “Hit the road Jack”. He confessed that at every step of this adventure he discovers and amazes himself. He transformed the Ray Charles classic into a highly personal version that fully embodies his interpretation.

“I’m so happy to have blocked Mario for you,” said Marc Dupré. You’re an artist, you surprised me again tonight. You have an aura around you bigger than your hair.

The 34 points of the coach and the 47 of the public allow Adam El Mouna to reach the semifinals. “It means a lot of things to me at the same time,” he commented. This song is dedicated to my brother who has his birthday today. Giving him that message, telling him to go as far as he wants, is a lot.
