“The Voice”: Deaf candidate inspires at blind auditions

The judges were robbed of their sight and they of their hearing, but that didn’t stop him from impressing the gallery. A deaf young woman impressed the “coaches” on the US version of “The Voice” on Monday night.

During the third round of the blind audition, the young singer named Ali took her first steps on the stage of the popular television competition with a rendition of the song “Killing Me Softly with His Song”.

“I’ve always been told, ‘You’ll never be able to do the normal things that other people do.’ And I want to prove to them, “You know what? They’re wrong. No matter what disability you have, you can do whatever you want,” she said immediately.

She has had a profound hearing loss since birth and “never let her deafness define her,” her mother said before her audition.

Although she wears hearing aids, they cannot correct her hearing 100%. “Even though I can’t really hear everything that’s happening, I can feel the music […] And I can feel the beat too I can feel every little thing coming out of the speaker, so I can do the things I do. It’s my superpower,” she explained.

An audition that caught the eye

With his voice and unique rendition of the popular ’70s song, Ali caught the attention of two coaches, namely Kelly Clarkson and Chance the Rapper.

But when she revealed her disability to them, she impressed the most. “If you had lined up all the singers we’ve heard so far and said, ‘Choose which one is hard of hearing,’ you probably would have been the last person I would have picked,” Blake Shelton replied because their musical style is different too different from that of the competitor.

Ali finally decided to continue the adventure in Kelly Clarkson’s team.
