The Voice John Legend steals Sasha Hurtado 18 as Knockouts

The Voice: John Legend steals Sasha Hurtado, 18, as Knockouts Round continues on NBC singing show

John Legend used his only theft to save 18-year-old Sasha Hurtado on Monday’s two-hour episode of The Voice as the knockouts round continued on the NBC show.

Sasha from Dallas, Georgia had just performed Ed Sheeran’s Make It Rain and John pressed his button to save her after she lost the round and was seconds from going home.

“Sasha deserved it and I couldn’t let her go home,” said John, 43. “She was so good in those rounds. It has now been stolen twice. And she just hit every note so beautifully and with a certain precision and control.”

Sasha was shocked and covered his mouth with his hand. Sasha, who was part of Gwen Stefani’s team, said during rehearsals that she chose the song because it symbolized what she thought she was going through.

“The song is really about pleas and it’s almost like a cry or a prayer and I feel like knockouts are like that,” Sasha said in a confessional. “You really have to sing for your life and prove you’re worthy of a spot.”

Sasha also said that faith is a really big part of her life.

“Damn, this girl can sing,” said Daysia, 17, of Leavenworth, Kansas, who competed against her in the round after listening to Sasha practice. “I need to improve my game.”

Daysia chose Get Here by Oleta Adams for her performance. They both faced off against Alyssa Witrado, 19, of Fresno, California, whose rendition of Queen Gwen’s Don’t Stop Me Now made her the knockout round winner.

“She’s just special,” Gwen said.

Just as Sasha was thanking Gwen for the opportunity, John pushed his button to steal it.

‘Oh dear God!’ Alyssa screamed.

The first three-way contest of the season 22 episode was between Justin Aaron, 34, of Junction City, Kansas; Kayla Von Der Heidi, 20, of Bisbee, Arizona; and Cara Brindisi, 34, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, from Gwen’s team.

Cara chose Bonnie Raitt’s “Love Me Like A Man” and performed it on guitar. Aaron chose Can We Talk by Tevin Campbell. Kayla chose REM’s “Losing My Religion.” At rehearsals, Gwen encouraged her to be more free in her final performances.

“For me, that was the hottest knockout,” said Camila Cabello, 25, after they performed in front of the judges.

“I feel like all three of you have mastered your lane,” said Blake Shelton, 46.

“Cara, you were spotless,” John said.

Gwen said it was an impossible decision.

“The winner of this knockout is Justin,” Gwen said. “He really took his gift to another level.”

Blake’s team went next. Austin Montgomery, 19, of Hemet, California, chose George Strait’s song You Look So Good In Love. Eva Ullmann, 22, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, chose the song Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande. Brayden Lape, 16, of Grass Lake, Michigan, chose the Brett Young song “Mercy.”

“I don’t think Brayden realizes how good he is yet,” Blake said in a confessional. “Not only does he have everything to win this show, he has everything to be a star.”

At the end of the round, Camila told Brayden that she thought Gwen had fallen in love with him.

“In a motherly way,” Gwen said.

“I think your tone is so beautiful and has an emotional innocence,” Camila said. “I know every girl falls in love with you right now.”

Camila told Austin she loved his song choices. Blake told Eva and Austin that they both did a great job, but he chose Brayden as the round winner.

“Brayden is only 16 and already so good,” Blake said.

John’s team went next. Sister duo Marylinds from La Plata, Maryland chose Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars to sing. Emma Brooke, 19, of Lyman, South Carolina, chose I Hope by Gabby Barrett. Kim Cruse, 30, of Woodville, Texas, who chose Tina Turner’s vision of Can’t Stand The Rain blew the judges away.

Gwen said Kim’s performance was “amazing”.

John told them that they both had the best performance on the show but ended up picking Kim as the knockout winner.

“I had to choose Kim because she’s a world-class singer and she just ruled the stage and was so aware of everything she was doing,” John said.

Camila pitted her teammates Devix, Andrew Igbokidi and Steven McMorran against each other.

Andrew, 22, of Hot Springs, Arizona, chose REM’s Everybody Hurts Steven, 40, of Nashville, chose Bruno Mars’ It Will Rain to sing. Devix, 28, from York, Pennsylvania, performed the song Yellow by Coldplay.

Camila eventually decided that Devix was the winner of the knockout.

“I had to pick Devix for the live playoffs because his voice is just so unreal,” Camila said. “He just puts his heart and soul into every performance.”

The Voice will return Tuesday on NBC.
