Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, 40, son of Prince Luitpold and Beatrix Wiegand, got married in church this Saturday, May 20, 2023. Sophie-Alexandra Evekink, a Canadian and Dutch national born in Singapore in 1989, married the future head of the Bavarian royal family in the presence of an audience of royal guests. The couple were married on December 24, 2022 in complete privacy.

The new princess is a dedicated woman. A graduate in politics, she worked for the World Health Organization in Geneva after studying at Oxford University. She is currently pursuing her PhD in criminology. Fueled by social ambitions, the couple decided to emphasize the charitable work of the family foundation during their marriage.

Princess Sophie’s veil is made in Ukraine

The new princess wants to “cause a stir”, specifies the house of Bavaria. She wanted to commemorate her commitment to Ukraine by wearing a Ukrainian brand Woná veil. A few months ago, Sophie and Ludwig traveled to the Ukrainian border to coordinate humanitarian aid projects for the Nymphenburg Foundation. Designed by Woná, the veil is made of organic fabric with Bavarian, Canadian and Dutch motifs, reminiscent of Sophie-Alexandra’s origins. Among these motifs we could distinguish a tulip, a maple leaf and a lion.

Princess Sophie chose the Reem Acra brand for her wedding dress, a nod to the Middle East where she lived for some time. Originally from Lebanon, Reem Acra came to the United States in the 1980s. “The combination of tradition and modern aesthetics that is important for brides is reflected in the wedding dress,” explains the Bavarian company. Sophie’s smart choices confirm what her stepfather, Prince Luitpold, recently told Bild magazine, who described her as a “very intelligent and educated woman”. She spent eight years in New York and Geneva at the United Nations, notably in the office of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Prince Ludwig of Bavaria lends his grandmother’s tiara to his wife

The bride’s tiara, in the form of flowers and plants, was inherited from Prince Ludwig’s grandmother, Princess Irmingard of Bavaria, when she married her cousin, Prince Louis of Bavaria, in 1950. Henriette Gruse also wore this tiara at her wedding to Prince Heinrich, Prince Ludwig’s younger brother, in 2017.

The honored children who followed the bride wore outfits inspired by a costume worn by Prince Henry, the groom’s great-uncle, which is depicted in a painting depicting him as a child.

The wedding in Munich was followed by a reception at the Duke of Bavaria’s Nymphenburg Palace. In the evening, a gala with a lot of fanfare is planned in Schleissheim Palace with the most important guests. On this evening, married women are invited to wear their tiara and men their insignia of the various orders. The bride will not wear a white dress. She chose a blue outfit, the color of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
