On Tuesday, October 10, the World Health Organization (WHO) called for the opening of a humanitarian corridor to the Gaza Strip. After the Hamas attacks that killed more than 900 people on its territory, Israel imposed a “total siege” on the Palestinian enclave and carried out four days of heavy bombardment. “A humanitarian corridor is needed to deliver essential medical supplies to the population,” a WHO spokesman said at a UN briefing in Geneva, adding that the organization was in discussions with the various parties.

“We need these supplies. Hospitals cannot function without fuel and electricity. The supplies we announced are already at low levels, so these supplies must arrive,” this official stressed. “The number of displaced people in the Gaza Strip has increased significantly since Saturday and stands at over 187,500,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said on Tuesday.
The United Nations recalled that “the imposition of sieges that endanger the lives of civilians by depriving them of essential goods is prohibited by international humanitarian law.” “Any restriction on the movement of people and goods that is aimed at carrying out a siege “The aim must be justified by military necessity, otherwise it may be a collective punishment,” emphasized the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
