The third season of The Witcher is approaching and with it the farewell of Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt of Rivia he is replaced by Liam Hemsworth, already confirmed in the 4th and 5th year. There’s no doubt that in those three years as the White Wolf, Cavill created a character we love dearly, and in keeping with that, the pain of parting gets worse after we see the character shine in season three.
The impression is that all of Cavill’s prayers have been answered and his character has become more fleeting and natural. In addition to more charismatic moments and cynical and funny lines, like in the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the figure looks like a parrot in a good way. He has stopped just staring and making noises with his mouth closed and now actively participates in discussions and ideas. All of this interaction is positive and adds a lot to the storyline.
Speaking of the plot, in the third year, monarchs, wizards and beasts of the continent compete to conquer Ciri (Freya Alan). Geralt then hides them, determined to protect his newly united family from those who threaten to destroy them. Responsible for Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) leads them to the sheltered fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to learn more about the girl’s untapped powers.
All this politics and palace intrigue in good Portuguese has already filled the sack. This core story returns even more boring and with a sense of deja vu. As the whole story progresses, one gets the impression that Nilfgaard’s progress has stalled for years. The pacing is ultimately not bad and would be perfect for an epic storyline, but that’s not the case with The Witcher. After seeing so many scenes of diplomatic discussion, it seems that the series has entered a big “coming”.
On the other hand, while the season again brings mistakes in the second year, it also brings positive news. As we saw at the end of last season, Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer are together and in the new episodes we see that they started a family. The fathermotherdaughter interaction is central to the current mood of the series and fits well with the Butcher of Blaviken’s new level of interaction.
The first five episodes of The Witcher’s third season show that the series has a wellplanned future ahead of it. The production fares better when it comes to the script and seems more intent on bringing in references from games and books. The final episodes will appear in on Netflix July 27th.
