A good month and a half after the derailment of a freight train in the Base Tunnel of the Gotthard railway, clearing and rescue work has been completed. However, the repair work will take months.
SBB announced on Sunday that extensive cleanup and rescue work has been completed. All 30 cars were rescued from the tunnel and all goods and damaged system parts were removed from the accident site, which was about eight kilometers long. Cleaning work has also been completed.
Detailed damage assessment and planning of repair work will now take place in mid-October. This work would then take several months.
The freight train derailed in the west tube of the Gotthard Base Tunnel on 10 August. This resulted in extensive material damage. Freight traffic has returned to the intact eastern tube since August 23.
