Citizens of Normétal, Saint-Lambert and La Reine in Abitibi-Ouest should not have to evacuate anytime soon, even if the forest fire near La Sarre is still threatening.
In an update Thursday afternoon, MRC d’Abitibi-Ouest said work was continuing at the site to tackle the fire that broke out on June 1.
If the view allows, [les pompiers forestiers] will be supported by three helicopters and four air tankers,” he said.
A Canadian Forces team is also digging a trench near Val-Paradis.
16 new firefighters are to come as reinforcements on Sunday.
However, citizens of Normétal and Valcanton need to beware of the smoke as north-westerly winds will blow for the next 12 hours. In Abitibi-Ouest, the same problem is likely to occur in the evening when the wind blows from the south.
The news comes the day after residents of Lebel-sur-Quévillon in North-du-Québec were evacuated again, less than a week after they were able to return to their homes after being away for 16 days.
