Jada Pinkett Smith says she has become a sort of “urban nun” in hopes of achieving “clarity and emotional sobriety” in her life.
In another interview to promote her new memoir, Pinkett Smith told the New York Times on Saturday how she enjoys meditating daily and reading sacred texts such as the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita, the Koran and the Bible.
Like a nun, she also abstains from sex, alcohol, violent entertainment and frivolous spending.
On Friday, in an interview with NBC, Pinkett Smith opened up about how she and husband Will Smith might divorce in 10 years, after revealing that the two had been living “completely separate lives” since 2016.
The prominent Hollywood couple married in 1997, but their marriage has long been plagued by rumors about infidelity and their sexuality.

In the past, both have discussed breakups and their marital problems, but Pinkett Smith went further and said that the couple was essentially divorcing without papers.
Smith, 55, and Pinkett Smith, 52, share two children, Willow and Jaden, and a son, Trey, from Smith’s first marriage.
The Times describes the couple as “partners in family and business who have long maintained an agreement they call “a relationship of transparency.”
When Will Smith wrote his own memoir in 2021, he actually gave the impression that the two were in a deep and strong relationship.
In a television interview last year, he said: “There has never been any infidelity in our marriage. “Jada and I talk about everything and we have never surprised each other with anything.”
But it is now clear that the actual situation is completely different.
“Why not just have an amicable divorce? Why not just do that?” asked Hoda Kotb during Friday’s interview.
“We don’t want to,” Pinkett Smith replied.
“We love our family and we love each other. You know, it’s more of a civil partnership. Who knows in ten years?’ Pinkett Smith said.

Kotb pressed further, asking if the two had a deal should they both decide to date someone else – but such a suggestion was quickly brushed aside.
“Well, you know, right now we’re focused on what was so beautiful, on deep healing – because of everything that happened.” “What happens after that, I don’t know yet,” Pinkett Smith explained.
“Is it possible that there will be a full reconciliation?” asked Kotb.
“You know, he’s getting old. You know what I say when he gets old, who will be there for him, Hoda, it will be me. It will be me. “I’ll be there,” Pinkett Smith said, suggesting the couple would never fully part ways.
During the interview, the host urged Pinkett Smith to dispel rumors about their strange relationship.
Kotb, 59, told how the couple had to contend with a “barrage of rumors” about the couple – including that they had an open marriage, they were swingers, he was gay, she was gay and “a million things “.
She asked, “What, if anything, is true?”
Pinkett Smith replied, “I would say none of that is true.”
She was not asked whether she or Will were bisexual.
While Pinkett Smith declined the question, the “Hollywood’s Odd Couple” rumors weren’t quelled.
Pinkett Smith has not yet said exactly why her marriage ended. “It’s a lot of things. “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted from trying,” she told NBC.
“We did some really hard work together,” she told People magazine.
“We just felt deep love for each other and we’re going to find out what that looks like.”
Two years ago, Pinkett Smith bought her own apartment as a 50th birthday present to herself when she moved out of the family estate in Calabasas, California.
News of the couple’s split surprised many, given Pinkett Smith’s candor on her Red Table Talk series, in which she and Smith discussed their extramarital relationship in a 2020 episode, and the slap at the 2022 Academy Awards.
At the ceremony, Smith took the stage and punched host Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair.

Smith has apologized multiple times for the incident, which earned him a 10-year ban from attending the Academy Awards or other Academy events.
And at the time, no one in the public knew that the highly publicized couple had been living apart since 2016.
Since then, she and Smith have made many public declarations of love and admiration for each other, suggesting that their split was amicable.
She told Kotb: “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted from trying. ‘I think we were both still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.’
She wrote in her book, “It wasn’t a divorce on paper.” But it was a divorce.’
Pinkett Smith, who admitted in 2020 to having an affair with singer August Alsina, said she considered a legal divorce but could never go through with it, openly revealing that she made a “promise” to her husband that she never would would give him a “reason” to get a divorce.
“I promised that there would never be any reason for us to divorce. “We’ll get through anything… whatever,” she said.

“We will get through everything, and I just couldn’t break that promise.”
“But you still live separately?” Kotb asked her to confirm: “We live separately.”
During the interview, Pinkett Smith also revealed how Smith met her in 1994 while he was still married to his first wife, Sheree Zampino.
The two struck up a friendship, but Pinkett Smith’s mother didn’t approve.
“He called me when I was in Baltimore with my mother. She said, “Look, tell him – put the phone down.” “You don’t have to talk to a married man.” And I thought, ‘She’s right.’ And so I was like, ‘Will, I’m so sorry, but my mom says please don’t call me anymore.’ And so we didn’t talk for a whole year.’
In 1995, Smith went through a divorce and wasted no time in reconnecting with Pinkett Smith.
“He called me and asked, ‘Where are you?’ And I thought, ‘I’m in Baltimore,'” she recalls.
“He said, ‘Are you coming back to LA?’ And I thought, ‘Yeah. He asked, ‘Are you seeing anyone?’ And I said, ‘No. And he said, “Good, because you see me now.” And I was like, ‘What?!’
“Just direct, you know. “I kind of liked that,” Pinkett Smith said.
