French firms based in Ukraine have experienced this in recent days. “We were told that the Ukrainian employees of some local subsidiaries preferred to destroy the industrial tool rather than allow it to fall into the hands of the Russians,” says Industry Minister Agnès Panier-Runashe.

Located close to the front lines, these branches are far from the only French victims of the Russian invasion. Some stopped their activities because of the conflict. Others continue because they produce essential goods, food or health. But some are unarmed. Malterie Soufflet lost about 40 of its 350 employees who took up arms in the early days of the conflict.
