How did our elders see 2024? Answer with these six sci-fi films that promise us immortals, vampires, lots of virtual reality… and even a deathmatch between King Kong and Godzilla. Follow the leader…
The thirteenth floor
(published 1999)
Craig Bierko, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Gretchen Mol and Vincent D'Onofrio fight in a virtual reality program and simulate the year 1937, the scene of a murder. Against the backdrop of progress and computer illusion, the feature film by Roland Emmerich (Mr. “Disaster Films”, to whom we owe The Day After Tomorrow in particular) is a free adaptation of the novel Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galouye, but above all is inspired by Words on a Wire, a television series by Rainer Werner Fassbinder that aired in 1973.

Highlander – The Return
(published 1991)
Christophe Lambert and Sean Connery return to duty in the sequel to 1986's Highlander. The two immortals join forces to protect the Earth. MacLeod, Christophe Lambert's character, saved her from the heat of the sun's rays with a shield after destroying the ozone layer. And when we see it again we realize that everything now has a very vintage character.

Narcopolis
(published in 2015)
In Britain in 2024, all medicines will be legalized. But now the pharmaceutical company Ambro appears to have developed an experimental product that is killing its users. Police officer Frank Grieves (Elliot Cowan) leads the investigation and, we suspect, uncovers a conspiracy. Science fiction fans will find themes already explored in Terminator or Blade Runner that are much more interesting.

The spaceman
(published 1960)
More than 60 years ago, the future did not look bright. In fact, in this feature film directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and starring Robert Clarke, Darlene Tompkins and Vladimir Sokoloff, an army pilot is catapulted into the year 2024 and discovers a world ravaged by nuclear conflict and in which humanity has established bases on other planets. And although the whole thing is reminiscent of a less successful episode of “The Fourth Dimension”, the historical factor applies.

Godzilla vs. Kong
(published in 2021)
Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall must do everything they can to prevent Godzilla from attacking the world's major cities in 2024. Kong obviously comes to the rescue and this blockbuster film from Adam Wingard will delight action fans, but moviegoers who enjoyed 2017 will be disappointed by Kong – Skull Island starring Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson.
