Millions of people will soon take trains, planes and cars as they make their annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage.

The 2023 Deloitte Holiday Survey found that 48% of Americans plan to travel over the holidays.

That’s up from the 31% who traveled between Thanksgiving and mid-January last year.

The last few weeks have seen relatively calm weather across the US, but computer models suggest a more active scenario could emerge, especially as the Thanksgiving holiday begins.

“It’s too early to give numbers, but know that we may be seeing a small active pattern,” said FOX weather meteorologist Jane Minar.

Here are the basics of the forecast leading up to one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Details of the forecast become clearer as the duration of the trip increases.

Outlook before Thanksgiving

The change in pattern will begin toward the end of the week as the jet stream begins to descend southward.

The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the possibility of storms on both sides of the country through the end of the week.

This could mean snow in the northern part of the country, while heavy rain is possible in the southern part of the country between November 16th and 19th.

This would likely create more chances for travel issues before Thanksgiving week.

Looking ahead to Thanksgiving week

The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above-average temperatures and precipitation across the eastern two-thirds of the country for Thanksgiving week.

The West should expect below average temperatures and average chances of precipitation during the week.

The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the possibility of a stronger storm developing in the western United States during Thanksgiving week.

This would mean heavy snow, gusty winds and rainy weather across the region.
