They deactivated almost 300 explosive devices in central Vietnam

The 299 devices were found in a warehouse in An My village, Gio My municipality, by specialists from NPA/Renew, a collaborative program between Quang Tri, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the Norwegian People’s Aid to restore the environment from the aftermath of war.

The NPA/Renew program, Nhan Dan newspaper said Tuesday when releasing the information, has completed the deactivation of explosive devices on more than 130 hectares in Gio My township after four months of work.

During that time, it detected and destroyed 354 explosives, of which cluster bombs accounted for 47 percent.

Quang Tri is Vietnam’s most heavily mine- and bomb-infested province, affecting almost 82 percent of the country’s total area.

Between 1995 and September 2022, more than 275 million square meters were cleaned there, thanks to the joint, regular and constant work of 34 NGOs and 23 other international organizations together with the Vietnamese army.

Quang Tri authorities expect that by 2025 the area of the surveyed country contaminated with cluster bombs will reach 62,000 hectares, of which 31,000 hectares will be cleared, accounting for 50 percent.
