They pay tribute to the national hero Gregorio Urbano Gilbert in the Dominican Republic

The blocs of the interim committees of Gregorio Urbano Gilbert of the PLD paid homage to the patriot with an offering of flowers this Tuesday in the Panteón de la Patria in the city’s colonial zone.

Intervening in the act was Milton Ogando, who highlighted Gilbert’s revolutionary qualities as a combatant against the two North American interventions in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.

He recalled how the prominent combatant, aged just 17, starred in a brave episode on San Pedro de Macor’s pier in 1916, when he faced the North American invaders alone and armed with a small revolver, fatally killing an officer wounded the infantry of the Navy.

He explained that in 1965, when the second US military intervention in that country took place, he was already ill and 66 years old when he joined the ranks of the Constitutionalists.

By decree issued on May 24, 2019, Gilbert was declared a national hero and January 10 was chosen as his national holiday.

He was a linotypist and was born in Puerto Plata in 1898.
