“President Joe Biden must change the failed Cuba policy, so far in line with Donald Trump’s,” said Ethiopian-American filmmaker Negash Abdurahman.

The New York-based director, who was in the capital for the presentation of his documentary Cuba in Africa, told Prensa Latina that he is “disillusioned with Biden for staying the same line as Trump (2017-2021)”.

I hope that changes, he said, because what has been done to Cuba is not fair, especially at the stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, he insisted, noting that the Republican has taken the blockade on the island to heart Measures have stepped up (more than 240), some of which have been adopted in the midst of the health emergency.

However, Biden has not deviated from that policy and “life must get easier for Cubans,” stressed Abdurahman, who reiterated his opposition to the unilateral siege the US government imposed on the Caribbean country more than six decades ago.

He noted that the information circulating against Cuba in the media for years is so strong that it is very difficult to change such a matrix in a single day, making his audiovisual work challenging.

One of the obstacles was the film’s funding, which “had a little problem: it would speak well about Cuba and Fidel Castro,” he added.

The educational technology consultant also explained that his documentary Cuba in Africa was the result of thorough research and a lot of perseverance.

Presenting the short film at the Infanta multiplex in the capital on April 1, Abdurahman pointed out that he was only “the messenger” of the untold story of the children’s epic of this Caribbean nation on African soil.

And just if the documentary has merit, it manages to connect with feelings from the first moment and throughout its 22-minute duration, it reaches the heart.

In this way he rescued the internationalist mission of Cuba between 1976-1991 from archives and put them in the mouths of protagonists from different perspectives, who were crucial for the conquest of Angola’s sovereignty, the independence of Namibia and ensuring the dismantling and overcoming of apartheid in South Africa.
