Tokyo, 02.04. (Prensa Latina) The Japanese company White Data Center (WDC) in Hokkaido now uses snow accumulated on the streets to cool its computer servers and, after melting, stores it in tanks for eel farming.

Network devices generate a lot of heat during their operation, but need a regular temperature below 25 degrees to stay in optimal conditions. In this sense, WDC sucks the cold air from the snow accumulations and directs it into the warehouse via a fan or heat exchanger.

This initiative will help free public roads from snow concentrations in the northern city of Bibabi and cut electricity bills by eliminating air conditioning to cool the server room, Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.

WDC teams work 24 hours. During this time, the cooling process melts the snow and the accumulated water reaches 33 degrees Celsius, an ideal temperature for commercial eel farming.

The fish project began in late February this year when the computer company brought nearly 1,700 specimens from Kobe into its facilities to turn them into the first breeding eels in Hokkaido.

WDC is a young, small company that wants to grow as a data center, but now also secures its income from indoor cultivation of short-cycle agricultural and fishery products.

Other experiments included abalone, sea urchins, Japanese mustard spinach, cherry tomatoes and ear mushrooms.

The Bibai government is also exploring the option of aquaculture and, with the help of WDC, set up a facility with a capacity for 6,000 eels in November 2022, although the medium-term goal is to reach production of 300,000 by 2023.

The fish are maintained for seven months until they reach 250 grams. They are then sent to schools and commercial establishments across the country for consumption.
