The City of Miami Water and Sewer Department (WASD) alerted county residents that they are not sending personnel to conduct water tests in homes and that this is a new scam attempting to sell expensive filters sell.

“We have received reports that some people are posing as department employees, saying they are working with county-contracted companies and requesting to enter their homes to take samples of their drinking water,” WASD reported in a news release.

The Miami-Dade Water Department assured that it conducts all water sampling itself and never hires third parties to collect samples in the distribution system or on customer properties.

“We are committed to providing the best possible service by not only providing drinking water to our customers but also ensuring they are safe,” they added about this scam.

They explained that water sampling in residential buildings is only carried out when customers request it from the department. “Standard procedure for WASD lab technicians is to collect water samples from outside the home unless the owner requests or specifically requests that samples be taken from inside the property,” they stated.

Miami Water also noted that to protect customer safety, WASD employees wear district uniforms with appropriate identification, district-issued identification cards, and drive vehicles with district license plates.
