The mayor of Lévis contradicts experts’ opinion that a tunnel or bridge between the two banks is not necessary and says we need to revive the idea of a third motorway connection instead of looking for alternative solutions.

Gilles Lehouillier responded on Monday to the report published at the end of the week by Le Journal in which several planning and transport experts questioned the need to build extensive infrastructure to improve traffic flow between Quebec and Lévis. They proposed a number of solutions, such as dynamic lanes on the bridge or improving public transport and ferry service.
For Mr Lehouillier, the solution is definitely a motorway tunnel.
” Need “
“The experts have already expressed their point of view, which is the same as that already expressed on the Quebec-Lévis tunnel. […] We are convinced that the motorway tunnel will be a necessity in the medium term. We will need a new highway connection between the two banks. »
The government abandoned the project based on studies it described as “outdated.” He reiterates that traffic between the two coasts is back to what it was before the pandemic.
“Not clear enough” on the tram
Mr Lehouillier also returned to comments he made before leaving on holiday in which he expressed doubts about the construction of the tram. The mayor of Lévis admitted that he “did not express it clearly enough” and reiterated his support for the Quebec project, which he believes will be good for Lévis because Lévis buses can be connected to the network.
“We were behind the major Réseau Express de la Capitale project [REC], which includes the tram, the tunnel, the reserved lanes and the connection between the two banks. We still believe in the highway tunnel, just as we still believe in the tram. The only question I have is whether we have the capacity to undertake major infrastructure projects in the Quebec region? » he said, still bitter about the abandonment of the motorway tunnel.
“The further the tram file progresses, the more questions we ask ourselves. Coudonc, will you ultimately implement the tram project? I would like to remind you that, unfortunately, this is the sad fate that has befallen the motorway tunnel. That’s my fear, that there won’t be much left of the REC if things continue like this. It’s more of a fear. »
