Walmart announced a recall of its Ready to Build Chocolate Cookie Bunny Hutch Kit just before the Easter holidays on April 17th.
In the event that people with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk unknowingly consume the product, it is necessary that the label on the carton lists “skimmed milk powder” as an ingredient. According to the Mayo Clinic, milk allergies can cause symptoms such as “hives, wheezing, itching or tingling around the lips and mouth, coughing or shortness of breath, vomiting” and, in rare cases, anaphylaxis — a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It is estimated that up to 2 in 100 children under the age of 4 are allergic to milk, which is one of the most common allergies in children.

The voluntary recall was initiated by Wilton Industries, a leading manufacturer of artisan food products in Naperville, Illinois, and manufacturer of the product. According to Wilton Industries, they became aware of the mishap after a customer sent an enquiry. The Ready to Build Chocolate Cookie Bunny Hutch Kit is a candy craft product that includes chocolate chip cookies, sprinkles, icing, and other decorative candies to build a “bunny hutch centerpiece for your Easter dinner,” according to Walmart’s website.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
The product was distributed nationwide in retail stores that include Walmart locations in the United States. Affected boxes have a batch code of 22005, 22006 or 22007 on the bottom.
To date, there have been no reports of illness or death due to an allergic reaction to the product. The company found that while the allergen was not correctly labeled on the “Contains” list on the packaging, “skim milk product” was listed as part of the ingredients.
