One company paid close attention to first impressions. One applicant was turned away within minutes of entering the building.
How do you prepare for a job interview? Most likely looking for a map and public transport connections, finding out about the participants and the advertised position, as well as the company itself. Also, to think of possible questions.
An example currently circulating on Reddit shows that the first impression after entering the building can really count. The post on the Life Pro Tips group appears to have come from a senior executive. It says, “Today a candidate botched his interview within five minutes of entering the building.”

Interacting with the “Receptionist”
According to the post, the candidate has applied for a role that requires customer-centric, warm, approachable, and outgoing behavior. But the man had already behaved dismissively with the receptionist. She greeted him and he barely maintained eye contact. So she tried to engage him in conversation. Again, no eye contact and no apparent interest in talking to her. He also said he was “openly rude” and treated her as “beneath her dignity”. When he thought he was talking to the decision maker, his personality completely changed.
What the candidate didn’t realize is that the “receptionist” was the HR manager. The man was then called into the conference room and told how “valuable and respectful each person on our team” is. Because of his interaction with the “receptionist”, the hiring manager deemed the candidate unsuitable. “Thank you for your time, but the interview is over,” said the interviewer before the interview even started. “Be nice to everyone in the building,” they said at the end.
