The 54-year-old American actor, who was found dead in his spa on Saturday, hoped his fight against addiction would be remembered more than his acting career.

“When I die, I know people will talk about friends, then friends, then friends. And I’m happy about that, I’m happy to have been a good comedian and to have made it possible for many people to have fun with my problems online. But if I die (…), it would be fun for friends to come, after all I’ve tried to help others,” he said in an interview on Tom Power’s “Q” podcast.

“I opened the Perry House in Malibu, a house to help sober men. I also wrote a play that is a personal message to the world, an exaggerated portrayal of me as a drunk. I had important things to say to people like me and people who love people like me.”

Matthew Perry has often spoken about his drug or alcohol problems while starring on the popular series.
