If you’re like us, by the time Easter is on the horizon you’ll be busy stocking up on sweets for Easter basket filling and general snacking weeks before the big day. That’s usually a good thing — you won’t have to deal with empty shelves in the candy aisle as the holiday approaches — but this year, be sure to think through your purchases. That’s because Ferrero, the company that makes children’s products in the US, just issued a recall on some of their chocolates, and the reason for that is pretty scary.

The Ferrero company is recalling two items, the Kinder Happy Moments chocolate range and the Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket. Apparently, tests at the facility where the products were made have detected Salmonella Typhimurium, a bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal illnesses like diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. It is particularly dangerous in children under the age of 5, adults over the age of 65 and people with weakened immune systems. Fortunately, there have been no reports of illness related to the recalled products in the US so far, but some people in Europe who ate products made at the same facility have become ill. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you don’t accidentally ingest any of the recalled products.
The Kinder Happy Moments line of milk chocolate and crispy wafers was sold at Costco in the San Francisco Bay Area and northern Nevada, and at BJ’s Wholesale Club stores. Look for the numbers 48RUP334, 48RUP335, 48RUP336 or 48RUP337 on the back to determine if your product is the recalled product.

The Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats Basket has been sold in Big Y supermarkets in Connecticut and Massachusetts and product recalls will have the number 03L 018AR – 306 printed on the bottom of the box.
If you have stockpiled some of the recalled Kinder chocolate, you should dispose of it immediately and disinfect all surfaces in your kitchen that it has come in contact with. You may also be able to return it at the point of purchase for a refund or exchange, but call the store you bought it from first to verify. Most importantly, make sure you don’t ingest it — no one wants to spend the week leading up to Easter in an upset stomach.
