Yamaha has introduced an all-new motor for electric mountain bikes, the PW-XM. Its peculiarity? An ever lower weight compared to the PW-X3 and, according to the brand, an ever higher level of reliability.

In the world of e-bikes, the war over electric motors is raging. Between the completely new Bosch Performance Line SX, the very light Mavic X-Tend, the Brose Drive H Mag for electric cargo bikes or the promising Pinion drive, every motor manufacturer is trying to position itself in certain segments.
Yamaha also adds a layer with a brand new system called PW-XM. The latter is mainly dedicated to electric mountain bikes and sporty hikes. It seems to be an improved version of the PW-X3, with which it shares many technical characteristics.
A couple who are still just as generous
Here, Yamaha has primarily worked on the weight of its tech: 2.6kg in total, versus 2.85kg on the PW-X3 side and 2.75kg on the Performance Line CX Race Limited Edition from Bosch, its direct competitor. To achieve this, Yamaha used solid magnesium in the engine’s crankcase.

Also, “Heat dissipation improvements have been made to ensure cooler operation, consistent performance, and a high level of reliability,” according to the company’s official website. Torque remains unchanged: 85 Nm, which is very generous and necessary to practice VTTAE.

Five support modes, marker support function, automatic mode (support is adjusted in real time), compatible with any Yamaha on-board computer and battery: here is the other information to consider about this new motor.
The Japanese company also wants to make access easier by allowing the PW-XM to be installed directly on electric bikes compatible with the PW-X3 and PWseries S2 systems. This intercompatibility thus promotes its democratization with certain VTTAE areas.
