This shared memory, who knows if we will ever have it

Dear Carioti, the noise that accompanies every April 25th in our country, and which this year also preceded January 27th, makes me think that it would be better to cancel these celebrations. Apparently they do not meet with consensus among the Italians, except in the Quirinal Palace, where dissenting interventions are not permitted. It's sad to see this, but it's true. In 2000, 62 years after the promulgation of the racial laws, the Italian Republic introduced the “Day of Remembrance” and this year those who govern it trembled at the idea of the demonstrations denounced by the Palestinians and many countries against Israel would expand on Saturday, led by South Africa, of the genocide against Arabs living in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. We Italian Catholics are all a little anti-Semitic deep down. After September 8, 1943, many supported the Nazis in hunting Jews, some helped the unfortunate, but the majority turned the other way… Nevertheless, up to 350,000 young American Jews enlisted to fight for liberation in Europe fight and die us from Nazi fascism. But feel a little ashamed, right?
Alessandro Gentili

Dear Mr. Gentili, by not visiting social centers and not defending institutions, I believe that it is right that the State has its liturgies and celebrations, and although the expression is overused, I think it is important not to forget “. But what you write is true: certain moments should serve to build a common memory, on April 25th of the liberation from Nazi fascism, which would not have been possible without the bloodshed of the Americans and non-communist partisans, and on January 27th about the Extermination of the Jews and with it the right of the survivors and their descendants to have a country in which they can claim to be safe. There is no point in denying it: we are far from successful, there is no common memory. However, canceling these commemorations would create the impression of a capitulation by the state to those shouting hatred in the streets. So all we can do is keep going, because the alternative is worse.
