This will be Ana de Armas, who transforms into Marilyn Monroe in the movie Blonde

After jumping to Hollywood a few years ago, Ana de Armas begins her Oscar career. At 34, the Cuban-Spanish actress will be responsible for bringing Marilyn Monroe to life in Blonde, a Netflix film coming to the platform on September 23 this year. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, which combines fictional elements with detailed episodes from the life of the actress on 700 pages. Filmmaker Andrew Dominik, director of The Murder of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) and several chapters of Mindhunter, the Netflix series, is responsible for the adaptation.

The project has been running for 12 years, and before Ana de Armas was finally chosen, actresses like Jessica Chastain or Naomi Watts were considered for the role. The film was to be screened at the Cannes, Toronto and Venice festivals. Even Thierry Fremaux, director of the French festival, stated that he had suggested Netflix show the film out of competition, but the platform declined.

Funded by Brad Pitt’s independent production company Plan B Entertainment, the company hopes it will be his big bet for the next Academy Awards and the inauguration of Ana de Armas in the North American film industry. After gaining recognition in Spain with productions such as El internado (2007-2010) or Hispania, la leyenda (2010-2012), the performer went to Los Angeles. Since then she has worked on productions such as Blade Runner 2049 (2017), No Time to Die (2021) or Daggers in the Back (2019), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

The book the film is based on, released in 2000, was a bestseller and received critical acclaim. Author Joyce Carol Oates, 84, has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and Best Book of the Year in the United States. She herself stated that she believes this is one of the two books she will be remembered for – the other being Them (1969). Blonde was adapted to screens for a television miniseries just a year after its release. The one responsible for interpreting the legendary actress back then was Poppy Montgomery.
