Thor: Love and Thunder has a $302 million weekend box office win worthy of the gods

Thor: Love and Thunder grossed $302 million at the global box office in its first weekend and secured a victory worthy of the gods.

As Variety reports, Thor: Love and Thunder grossed $143 million in North America and an additional $159 million internationally.

While the latest MCU film’s launch fell slightly short of domestic estimates of $150 million, it still performed very well, earning more than Thor: Ragnarok’s $123 million in 2017. It’s also just behind Jurassic World: Dominion at $145 million and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $185 million for the biggest opening weekend of 2022.

Thor: Love and Thunder cost $250 million to produce, and Marvel spent about $100 million on promotion, so those numbers should be very promising for the studio. Finally, Thor: Love and Thunder had the 12th best opening of any MCU film, of which there were 28 before that.

In our review of Thor: Love and Thunder, we said that it’s “held down by a cookie-cutter conspiracy and mishandling of supporting characters, but thanks to the chemistry of Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, it succeeds as the MCU’s first romantic comedy.”

Minions: The Rise of Gru took second place, earning $45.5 million over its second weekend. By the looks of it, the fifth entry in the Despicable Me franchise has grossed $210 million domestically and $399.8 million worldwide.

Top Gun: Maverick took third place by adding another $15.5 million to its total in its seventh weekend of release. The second Top Gun film has grossed $597.4 million domestically and over $1.18 billion worldwide.

Elvis took fourth place with $11 million, down 40% from its opening weekend. Elvis has grossed $91.1 million in North America to date.

Rounding out the top five was Jurassic World: Dominion with $8.4 million in domestic ticket sales. That was enough for the latest Jurassic film to break the $350 million mark in North America.
