Thousands of migrants arrive at Mexico’s southern border before the end of Title 42

(EFE).- A new wave of nearly 5,000 migrants from different countries arrived in Chiapas on Mexico’s southern border on Monday, hoping to enter the United States when that country’s Title 42 expires next Thursday.

Title 42 is a measure passed by Donald Trump and later continued by President Joe Biden to deport migrants due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a state of emergency that will end next Thursday in the United States.

Migrants in Tapachula, on the Guatemala border, are interpreting the disappearance of Title 42 as an opportunity to enter the United States despite the persistence of other restrictions.

Franklin Calleja, a Venezuelan who is traveling with his wife and their 4-month-old son who fell ill en route, fears he won’t make the border with the United States on May 11 when the measure expires, so he believes that he could be threatened with immediate deportation, which will ruin your trip.

“This is one of the most difficult countries to spread [México], but they support us right now. We sold our things and the house to raise money to come here [a Tapachula]. Being deported is like losing what we have earned over many years,” he said.

Uncertainty at the border is growing ahead of the end of Title 42. Washington has made it clear that the end of the above measure will not mean the end of all restrictions, but many of the migrants remain hopeful that US authorities will let them through.

For this reason, thousands of migrants on the outskirts of the Tapachula Ecological Park are pushing to speed up permits from the Provisional Attention Center (CAP), where they issue documents that would allow them to stay in Mexico for 45 days.

Venezuelan Andrés José Vázquez, who is traveling with three cousins, has denounced the theft of his money at the Mexico-Guatemalan border, for which he asked for help to reach the United States.

“If we arrive after 11 (May) we have to wait. And if we arrive before 11 and they give us the opportunity, in God’s name we will pass,” said the migrant.

The arrival of migrants in Tapachula increased this weekend due to this type of rumors that surfaced until the end of Title 42. The region is facing an unprecedented migratory flow, with more than 2.76 million undocumented immigrants intercepted by the United States at the border with Mexico in fiscal 2022.

Mexico recorded an annual increase of more than 43% in the number of “persons in an irregular situation” with 444,439 persons in 2022.
