Thousands of opponents of the government in new protests in southern Syria

Damascus – In southern Syria, thousands of people once again protested against the government of ruler Bashar al-Assad. Between 3,500 and 4,000 people took part in the demonstration in the provincial capital, Suwaida, on Friday, a protester told AFP news agency by telephone. Another activist made similar estimates. It was the biggest demonstration since new protests began in the government-controlled province of Suwaida last month. On Wednesday, three people were injured by gunfire in Suwayda when protesters tried to close an office of the ruling Ba’ath party. Activists blamed Baath Party members for the violence.
