France is hosting a humanitarian aid conference for Gaza
French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting a humanitarian aid conference for Gaza this Thursday (November 9th, 2023) in Israel’s absence. The aim of the conference, held on the eve of the annual Paris Peace Forum, is to “bring together the main donors and accelerate aid to Gaza,” whether in food, fuel or finance, the French Foreign Ministry said last week. The United Nations estimates that $1.2 billion in aid will be needed for the population of Gaza and the West Bank by the end of the year.
Apart from a few European prime ministers and the heads of the main institutions of the European Union, the participants of the Paris conference are not high-ranking. Israel will not attend and only a few Arab nations will send delegates. Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh will be present on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. Egypt, which along with Qatar is playing a key role in bringing more aid to the Gaza Strip, will send a ministerial delegation. No statement is expected at the end of the conference. (MS/VT/afp/efe)
