Thousands of women are exposed to violence in El Salvador

According to the source, nearly 23,000 cases of violence against women were reported every year and even in 2023, 598 murders occurred against them.

The Directorate of Information and Analysis (DIA) of the aforementioned Ministry, in its report on the facts, status and situation of violence against women, emphasized the gravity and scale of the problem.

The document detailed the impact on women in recent years, with 2022 seeing a change in levels of violence with some declines.

Compared to 2022, the number of murderous, femicide, sexual and physical violence has decreased. However, the study says that economic, financial and psychological problems have increased.

According to women’s rights organizations, the situation is alarming because this decline is not significant.

“When we detail the typologies, we see that domestic violence has increased and sexual violence remains high,” said Silvia Juárez, director of the Organization of Salvadoran Women for Peace (Ormusa).

According to precision data, 24,089 acts of violence against women were registered in 2022, 25,037 in 2021, 20,642 in 2020 and 23,825 in 2019.

On the other hand, femicides reached 71 in 2022, a decrease compared to 133 in 2021, while 73 and 113 were reported in 2020 and 2019, respectively.

Regarding sexual violence, the report said 5,211 incidents were recorded in 2022, including the offenses of rape, sexual harassment, sexual assault, statutory rape, intent to engage in prostitution and pornography, among others.

This situation is consistent with data from Ormusa, which reported 43 femicides in its report on attacks from January to November 2023, of which 21 were committed in intimate or intimate relationships, accounting for 48 percent of these deaths.

Regarding the issue, Angélica Rivas of the Feminist Collective said that what is appreciated and experienced is not “a decline in events, but a decline in complaints, and this has to do with the situation of the pandemic (2020) and the regime do.” .

The information becomes relevant today as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, established by the United Nations following the murder of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic, is celebrated.
