Three American women selling clothes at a market in Mexico have been missing for more than two weeks, the police chief of a small Texas town said Saturday, March 11.
Marina Perez Rios, 48, her sister Maritza Trinidad Perez Rios, 47, and friend Dora Alicia Cervantes Saenz, 53, crossed the border into Mexico on February 24.

These women, who live in Texas, were planning to go to Montemorelos, a city in northeastern Mexico, to sell clothes at a market, Roel Bermea, police chief of the Texas township of Penitas, confirmed to AFP.
Reasons for her disappearance unknown
After several days without a word, the husband of one of them reported their disappearance to the Penitas police, which is very close to the border. The reasons for her disappearance are still unknown at this time. “We don’t know if they reached (Montemorelos),” added Roel Bermea. This city is about 3 hours drive from the US border. The federal police (FBI) have been notified, Roel Bermea said.

On Monday, four Americans were kidnapped and two killed in Matamoros, also in northeastern Mexico. They had crossed the border to receive medical treatment in Mexico, a popular medical tourism destination, before being shot at by gunmen and then kidnapped. On Friday, Mexican authorities announced the arrest of five people suspected of involvement in her kidnapping.
